The Truth About Trunk Shows

September 13, 2016

If you are in the shopping phase for bridal gowns, pouring over designer websites looking for your vision of the perfect wedding gown of your dreams, you may have come across the term “trunk show” and wondered what that entails.  Let me explain.

For a store such as Elegant Bridals, we go to market twice a year and select gowns from the different designers. In fact, we are flying out this week and next to go to different fashion shows. We are currently buying gowns that we see on the runways that will be delivered in the coming months for the 2017 bridal season. We are very careful to buy gowns for our store that fit our region. We live in Augusta, GA. Trust me, it can be as hot as the devil’s workshop or as humid as a Rainforest nine months out of a year so we look for gowns that are not heavy and hot for our brides to wear. I can remember one designer exclaiming that the gown on the runway was a #1 seller in Australia. I remember thinking, when I see Kangaroos jumping down Washington Road then I will care about what is selling in Australia!  My point is that when we go to fashion shows, we have YOU in mind, our beautiful southern bride that loves tradition but has enough spunk to be fashion forward as well.

The designer may have as many as 50 different styles in their collections for any given season. For example, as a buyer you may select the 10 gowns that you feel represents your brides the very best. That means there are many other styles the designer has that may not be in your store but you are able to order any of the 50. A Trunk Show is when a designer lends an authorized store their complete line usually over a weekend.

A word of CAUTION, if you are shopping and the store doesn’t carry the designer you have your heart set on, but offers to order it for you…THINK TWICE. If they are not an authorized retailer and your dress comes in and it has a problem, so do you.  It is much like ordering online.  There will be no form of recourse because the designer will not assist a store who does not carry their line.

Go to your favorite designer’s website, they will tell you what stores have invested in their line and who they will help if help is needed. They will also tell you where trunk shows are. Go to your locally owned bridal salon’s website such as and you will see what events are happening and make an appointment. If you are now bridal shopping, I can promise you this; we probably have your gown and if by some rare chance that we don’t, I promise you we do have your very best experience.
